What Was the Longest MONOPOLY® Game?

MONOPOLY® is a game that can take a long time to play, and some games have lasted anywhere from 12 hours to more than two months. According to Hasbro, the company that makes MONOPOLY®, the longest MONOPOLY® game lasted for 70 days. Details of exactly how and when that longest MONOPOLY® game was conducted are lost to history, although there have been MONOPOLY® games taking place in unusual settings that also set records.

More facts about MONOPOLY®:

  • When first approached by inventor Charles B. Darrow in the early 1930s, the toy company Parker Brothers rejected the game, citing several flaws in it. Undaunted, Darrow prepared and sold 5,000 handmade editions to a Philadelphia department store. After the game caught on, Darrow approached Parker Brothers again, and this time, the company agreed to market the product. Parker Brothers is now a subsidiary of Hasbro.

  • The longest MONOPOLY® game to take place in a bathtub lasted for 99 hours. This record has been bested by efforts to play the game in other settings, including an underground game that lasted for 100 hours and a tree house MONOPOLY® marathon that lasted for 240 hours.

  • By the year 2000, it was estimated that more than 500 million people had played at least one game of MONOPOLY®.
